Providing Inclusive Education for Disabled Students in Urabá

Although Antioquia is often admired for being one of the most progressive areas in Colombia, there are several regions within it that still need help. One of these is the region of Urabá, where poverty rates exceed 50% and access to mental health services and inclusive education for children with disabilities is nonexistent.

Fundación Caricias de Sol was born in 2015 to fill this gap and has since created multiple initiatives that provide the community with necessary programs. Among these are academic programs, home visits for those with limited mobility, environmental education, and entrepreneurship & income generating skills projects.

Though the foundation has achieved much, they hope to continue helping the community. Their goal is to now provide education, therapeutic interventions, and psychosocial support to 120 children, teens and young adults with disabilities as well as train 60 caretakers. Through this initiative, Fundación Caricias de Sol hopes to:

• Provide psychological and emotional support.
• Teach basic life skills that promote independence.
• Implement therapeutic interventions such as occupational, speech, and physical therapy.
• Implement inclusive learning methodologies according to each participant’s ability.
• Advance the skills of the caretakers thereby improving each family’s quality of life.
• Promote community inclusion and personal body autonomy.

Caricias de Sol understands that individuals with disabilities in Urabá often lack access to services due to social, economic, and geographic barriers. This gap affects their quality of life, limits their independence and creates a burden on the families.
