Creating Change in Chinchiná through Merit-Based Scholarships

For the past 3 years, Minga House Foundation has worked tirelessly to support the children of Chinchiná, a small town in the rural coffee-growing region of Caldas.
Although Colombia falls behind in terms of education and language skills (only 3% of Colombians are bilingual and just 39% of high schoolers go on to university), children in rural areas face even more hardships as rural public schools have about 40-50 students per class and they consistently score lower in language and math compared to their urban peers.
For motivated students in Chinchiná, the opportunity to become bilingual and pursue higher education is almost nonexistent without outside support.
For this reason, Minga House Foundation has focused their efforts on Colegio Menfis, where they have increased teachers’ salaries, upgraded infrastructure, provided scholarships, and purchased furniture & equipment. Through their efforts, they have converted it into the first and only bilingual school in the area, but they understand that this is just the first step.
They now seek to award scholarships to 20 children currently attending overcrowded and underfunded public schools. Through these, they will give students from low-income families access to a high-quality, bilingual education at Colegio Menfis.
Each scholarship will cover tuition, books, uniforms, food, extracurricular activities, English immersion camps, leadership & career workshops, as well as research projects. This program will also expand outside the classroom to create a community-wide movement for bilingualism through festivals, debate club, spelling bee contests, chess club, international exchange & young ambassador programs, career planning workshops, bilingual tour guide challenge, and worldschooling ambassador program.
In a region where overcrowded classrooms, limited English instruction, and scarce resources hinder opportunities, this initiative will break the cycle of poverty and empower marginalized youth with the language, skills, and confidence to thrive in an interconnected world.
How you can help?
For $2,500 you can become a Padrino (Sponsor) for a child and transform their life. Or you can also help cover basic expenses, such as:
- $33 will cover the school supplies for 1 child.
- $103 will provide all the books for a child.
- $130 will support a child’s after-school activities.
- $180 will fund the annual registration fee for 1 child.
- $462 will provide a child with lunch for a full year.
- $898 will fund a child’s full tuition for the year.
Through your support, we hope to not only see the 20 students reach their highest potential, but also create a change in the community as children learn that their efforts and hard work will pay off. Please help us support this model for rural education transformation in Colombia!
