In Bogotá, food insecurity affects a great number of vulnerable women, mothers, migrants and those coming from rural areas without support. As a matter of fact, 29.2% of women led households in Colombia face moderate or serious food insecurity.

But there are many women with children facing serious health issues who stay in public hospitals without financial resources or support, who go hungry as they must prioritize their children while they’re in pediatric units, neonatal units or the ICU. As a result, their physical health deteriorates, as well as their mental and emotional health, which in turn affects their role as mothers and caretakers.

Fundación Legado was born from founder Lorena Ávila’s own experience with loneliness and postpartum depression. Recognizing how demanding motherhood can be, she began thinking of vulnerable mothers caring for hospitalized newborns—women living in poverty, facing domestic violence, or navigating teenage motherhood without support. She also saw the children behind every hospital bed, whose well-being is deeply connected to their mother’s strength. What began as personal compassion became a commitment to protect both mothers and children during their most fragile moments.

As part of their mission, Fundación Legado created SOS Hospitales, an initiative created to help mothers facing these issues using two main pillars:

  1. Dignified Nutrition: Provides breakfast and lunches for mothers and caretakers in the pediatric and neonatal wings.
  2. Emotional Well-being: Provides emotional and social support via workshops, recreative activities, and celebrations.

Through their program they help approximately 500 women every year at Hospital Público Simón Bolivar. With your help, they now wish to support 160-180 women by visiting the hospital 5 times a month, and provividing them with nutrition, support, and clothing kits.
