Aracataca is best known as the birthplace of Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who gave the world the term magical realism. But there is no magical realism in Aracataca. Only the harsh reality of rural schools that face infrastructure issues, which in turn affects students’ learning, drop-out rates, and the dignity of these children.

But this is not a special case: in many of the rural areas of Colombia getting an education means doing so in decaying structures with no potable water or sewage connections, little to no connectivity, and environments that do not promote wellness, safety, or opportunities.

But Fundación Tierra Grata Colombia has proven that by improving infrastructure of rural schools you impact not just the academic abilities of students, but also their health, safety, motivation, and the hope of the entire academic community. In the last 10 years, the foundation has worked with rural and hard to access communities so that education stops being a privilege. Through sustainable technological solutions, community participation and local capacity building, Tierra Grata is able to improve the living, learning and productive conditions in a community.

For this reason, they have created a campaign to rebuild this forgotten school and to show that when we work together, it’s possible to transform education.

Through this project, Fundación Tierra Grata Colombia seeks to directly impact the lives of 150 current students plus 5 teachers who currently work at the school, though ultimately, this campaign will go on to affects thousands of students in the future as well. With your support, they will:

  • Improve the actual building by fixing walls and roofs, painting, and installing windows and doors.
  • Provide basic furniture such as chairs, tables, and school supplies.
  • Provide access to potable water and bathrooms for the students.
  • Install solar panels, satellite internet, a computer, and a projector so teachers can provide a better teaching experience.
  • Implement workshops with students, teachers, parents, and the community so they may take ownership of the school and learn how to properly care for the new installations.

Please help Tierra Grata transform not just the lives of these students, but also the future of an entire community!!
