Local Ally: El Rio Foundation
Beneficiaries: 28 children
Location: Buritaca, Magdalena
Along the north coast of Colombia, where the tropical forest meets the Carribean Sea, El Rio Foundation can be found in the small town of Buritaca. Located in a post-conflict area, Buritaca has a history of little government support and was further affected when the Covid pandemic hit. After nearly 2 years of no-school, children in the community where left with huge gaps in their education. An education that was already under-funded to begin with.
In 2020, El Rio Foundation started filling these gaps by implementing a multi-sports club for children in the local area that promotes teamwork, supports child development, and encourages them to join academic tutoring. They were able to create a safe space that encourages comprehensive development of girls, boys, and youth through sports and art activities, such as: Dance, Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball, and dynamics that build confidence and emotional wellbeing.
Betsy is one of the 28 children that receives support from El Rio Foundation. At first, she found it hard to focus during activites and had little motivation to participate. With steady support she was able to grow more confident. Today, Betsy performs dance routines with joy and pride, showing how safe spaces can change a child´s life.
